Brazilian Coalition’s note regarding the British journalist and indigenous affairs expert’s disappearance in the Amazon

The Brazilian Coalition on Climate, Forests and Agriculture, a movement formed by more than 300 representatives of agribusiness, civil society, the financial sector, and the academia, publicly expresses its unease and deep concern over the circumstances of the Brazilian indigenous expert Bruno Araújo Pereira and the British journalist Dom Philips, both missing since last Sunday, June 5th, in the Vale do Javari region, western Amazon region.

We reinforce the many requests from society for instant action by the Brazilian government, so that every asset and manpower needed from public security forces and the army are allocated to extend the search and investigations, aiming to solve the case once and for all.

The Amazon, such a precious region for the country, has raised national and international concern due to the dissemination of organized crime and violence, which has taken advantage of the absence or precariousness of State institutions. Among the main victims of such a background are indigenous leaders and human rights activists, who are constantly dealing with threats.

It is paramount that the Brazilian government takes all the necessary measures to avoid any doubts about the country’s interest in finding them and settling this matter.
